How to Revise for IB Business Management Paper 1 (SL and HL)

IB Business Management Paper 1 rewards students who can use a business case to support their reasoning. The pre-released statement helps you prepare, but the unseen case material is what you must respond to on examination day.

Understand what is pre-released

The syllabus provides a pre-released statement around three months before the examination. Treat it as a starting point for focused research into business context, terminology and likely strategic issues. Do not memorise a model essay and assume it will fit the unseen material.

Make a short research file of relevant definitions, stakeholder tensions and business tools. For every finding, ask which piece of information would be needed in the unseen case before you could use it convincingly.

Know the exam structure

Paper 1 lasts 1 hour 30 minutes at both SL and HL. Section A contains structured work and Section B contains a ten-mark extended response chosen from two options. The case brings information that was not available when the pre-release arrived.

Plan your time in proportion to the marks, leaving a final minute to check whether each answer explicitly addresses the command term and the organisation described.

Move from knowledge to application

A definition earns its place when it helps explain the situation. For instance, stating that market segmentation divides customers into groups is less useful than explaining why a particular business might target price-sensitive customers with a different product and promotion strategy.

Build paragraphs around a business fact, a relevant idea and a consequence. A chain such as a new product requiring training, which raises short-run costs but may improve service quality, shows reasoning rather than vocabulary alone.

Build a stronger ten-mark response

For a longer question, develop two credible arguments instead of listing six short points. Explain the mechanism, use case evidence, examine a limitation and finish with a supported judgement. A recommendation is not strong simply because it sounds decisive.

Useful evaluation compares options against explicit criteria: finance, workforce capability, stakeholder consequences, competition, uncertainty and the time horizon. Your conclusion should weigh those factors in the situation given.

Practice without seeing guidance first

Write a timed answer from an unfamiliar fictional case. Only after submitting your response should you compare it with indicative marking guidance. Record what you missed: a weak explanation, missing application, or a conclusion that was not justified.

EIE's prepared IB Business practice includes original paper-style sets rather than claiming to reproduce official IB examination questions. The intended practice flow is answer, commit, inspect guidance and self-mark.
