CIE 0450 vs 0264 Business: What Changed for 2027?
Updated: Oct 12
If you are seeing both 0450 Business Studies and 0264 Business online, you are not looking at two completely different courses. Cambridge is replacing 0450 with 0264.
Cambridge's official guidance says 0450 is no longer available from 2027, while 0264 has its first assessment in March 2027. Cambridge also says there are no major changes to the syllabus content, but there are changes to the assessment model and updates to content, terminology and emphasis.
What definitely changed
The syllabus code changes from 0450 to 0264.
The title changes from Business Studies to Business.
The new syllabus is used for first assessment from 2027.
Content has been modernised, including more current technology and sustainability examples.
Terminology has been updated and Cambridge added an explicit list of formulas and ratios.
Assessment-objective weightings changed, with more weight on application.
Paper 1 now has four parts per question instead of five, and its mark breakdown changed.
Paper 2 part (a) questions are now applied questions.
What stayed familiar
The six broad subject areas remain familiar: business activity, people, marketing, operations, finance and external influences. Cambridge's own help guidance says there are no major changes to the syllabus content.
Moving on to AS & A Level? Our Cambridge 9609 Business syllabus guide sets out what the next course covers and how its papers work.
That means older 0450 resources are not automatically obsolete. The important question is whether the exact concept or skill still appears in the 0264 syllabus and whether the old question matches the current assessment style.
The new assessment emphasis
For 0264, the overall assessment-objective weighting is approximately 35% AO1 Knowledge and understanding, 30% AO2 Application, 22% AO3 Analysis and 13% AO4 Evaluation.
The practical message is simple: context matters. A student who knows the textbook but writes generic answers will leave marks behind because application is a large part of the qualification.
Can you still use 0450 past papers?
Yes, but selectively. At the time of writing, Cambridge's 0264 page has specimen exams but no 0264 past papers. Historical 0450 questions remain useful for practising concepts and writing skills where the content still maps to the new syllabus.
Do not assume every old question reflects the exact 2027 assessment format, and do not treat historical 0450 grade thresholds as predictions for 0264.
A sensible revision rule
Use the current 0264 syllabus as the source of truth. Use 0450 papers as a question bank. If an old question tests a current concept, practise it; if the assessment format has changed, adapt how you interpret the mark demand.
