IB Business Management SL vs HL: Topics, Papers and What to Revise
Students often ask whether Higher Level Business Management is just more reading. The meaningful difference is the content depth and how you are assessed. A good revision plan starts by separating shared SL/HL work from genuine HL-only requirements.
The shared foundation
Both levels cover the same five main business functions: introduction to business, human resources, finance, marketing and operations. Both need accurate terminology, case-study application and the ability to justify decisions rather than simply describing them.
For example, a labour-turnover calculation might be relevant at both levels. The next step is to explain what rising turnover could mean for recruitment costs, product quality, training or employee morale in this particular business.
HL-only topics and extensions
The current course contains HL-only topics as well as HL material embedded within shared topics. The Business Management Toolkit also has tools identified as HL only. A textbook page may mix shared and HL-only content, so use the syllabus labels rather than assuming every line on a shared topic is required for SL.
If you study SL, make sure practice questions do not depend on HL-only concepts. If you study HL, revise the shared foundation first: weak fundamentals make an extended evaluation less convincing, however advanced the vocabulary.
The examination difference
Paper 1 is sat by both levels and lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. It uses a pre-released statement and an unseen case, combining structured questions and extended responses. Paper 2 is also common to both levels but lasts 1 hour 30 minutes at SL and 1 hour 45 minutes at HL; HL has more marks available.
Paper 3 is HL only. It focuses on a social enterprise and culminates in a 17-mark action plan, alongside a two-mark and a six-mark question. This is a distinct skill: your proposal needs to respond to the organisation's human need and constraints, not read like a generic business plan.
Internal assessment
Both levels complete a business research project of up to 1,800 words, using a single real organisation, a clearly framed issue, and three to five supporting documents. The project uses one of four concepts: creativity, change, ethics or sustainability.
The project's assessment weighting is 30% at SL and 20% at HL. That difference should influence time management, but not lead anyone to neglect the project's evidence and analysis.
How to revise efficiently
Use one colour or tag for shared content and another for HL-only items. Separate calculation cards from longer analytical questions. Time extended responses and mark your own work only after you have committed an answer.
EIE's upcoming IB Business Management Student Portal course is designed with SL/HL separation for its original practice items and topic notes, so an SL learner is not expected to work from an unfiltered HL question bank.
