# The Lorenz Curve and Gini Coefficient: Measuring Income Inequality
Understanding the distribution of income within an economy is a cornerstone of both A-Level and IB Economics. While economic growth tells us the size of the pie, equity measures tell us how that pie is sliced.
To evaluate whether a society is becoming more or less equitable, economists rely heavily on two related tools: the Lorenz Curve and the Gini Coefficient.
What is the Lorenz Curve?
The Lorenz Curve is a visual representation of income (or wealth) distribution across a population.
It plots the cumulative percentage of total national income against the cumulative percentage of the corresponding population, ranked from poorest to richest.
